Crestron Control System Instructions
What is a Crestron control system?
In the most basic sense, it's a touchscreen device used to operate teaching and learning technologies.
All of the A-V and computing devices in the room (e.g. PC, VCR/DVD, projection system, audio system, electric screen) are connected to a Crestron "brain box" using proprietary programming and dedicated cabling. Control for each of these devices now occurs through a touchscreen.
In addition to turning on a data/video projector or operating an electric screen, any* operation that would normally require pushing a remote control button (e.g. volume, play, rewind) has been incorporated into the touchscreen interface. No more remote controls!*
Additionally, the A-V techs gain remote access to the teaching and learning technologies with the Crestron system and RoomView software. Troubleshooting e-classroom issues and maintaining teaching and learning technologies occurs much more efficiently as a result.
*Exception taken for slide projectors
Where has Crestron been installed?
To date, and including the pilot in the summer of 2005:
- Bloomer/Brown 122 Auditorium
- Carnegie 10 Auditorium
- Griffiths 123 Auditorium
- Hepburn 218 Auditorium
- Richardson 15 Film Viewing Room
- Eben Holden Main Conference Room
- Newell Center for Arts Technology (Rooms 108, 003, 003A & 003B)
How do I use a Crestron control system?
- The touchscreen control is mounted on the podium or on the wall near the podium. Press on the Crestron touchscreen display once to activate the backlight and view the welcome screen. Press the Crestron touchscreen display again to access the control system.
- Computer connectivity first! If you are the first person to use this space today, you will need to turn on the computer
manually; otherwise, move the mouse to "wake up" the PC. If you are using a laptop, connect the VGA cable and power on the laptop now. In either case (laptop or computer), log in to the network.
- Select the source next! What do you wish to use and project? Choose among the options on the top of the touchscreen. Any one of these selections will simultaneously turn on the projector and lower the electric screen. Source options include DVD/VCR/TV, PC, Laptop and Other Inputs. Please see detailed Crestron instructions (PDF) for information about those options.
- Control the volume (up/down/mute) directly from the touchscreen display. The system launches initially at 50% audio volume, but you will quickly become accustomed to your own volume preferences. In most cases, a slider bar will provide visual indication of volume level
- When you are finished, remove any media from the DVD/VHS player or computer DVD drive . Log off from the network but please, do NOT shut down the computer!
- Select SHUTDOWN on the Crestron touchscreen. You will receive a warning about projector cool-down mode. Note that the projector cannot be turned back on until that process is completed. Select SHUTDOWN to continue or CANCEL to return to the start screen.
- If you have any questions or experience problems using this auditorium or the Crestron system, please call the Information Technology HelpDesk (x5770) or office (x5595) immediately.
