Home Network Installation
There are several relatively simple ways to set up a network at home and share your broadband Internet connection, printer(s) and files among all your home PCs. Please be advised that some Internet service providers prohibit shared Internet access using a single account. Check with your ISP before proceeding!
How Stuff Works.com and Home Net Help.com will provide basic home networking information to get you started.
If you have a cable or DSL modem, broadband routers are simply the best way to share your home Internet connection among multiple computers. Broadband routers offer a great combination of security, flexibility, and easy management.
Routers use an Internet sharing method called NAT or network address translation. NAT not only shares your Internet connection, it acts like a basic firewall keeping most hackers out of your LAN.
Since a broadband router provides a firewall between your network and the Internet, you can share files and printers between your computers without worrying about complex security issues. Broadband routers are known by other phrases: cable modem router, dsl router, Internet gateway, or broadband gateway. Don't be confused, they almost always mean the same thing!
We recommend either wireless or a combination of hard-wire" and wireless for your home network. CISCO and D-Link are just a few to offer kits making home networks easy to set up and configure.
