SynchronEyes Software Instructions

SynchronEyes software is designed to create a more controllable learning environment in the computer lab. This software also allows the option to display individual student "desktops" via the projector to the entire class, to facilitate sharing work-in-progress or student presentations.

Connect and view Top of page

  • Double-click the SynchronEyes software icon on instructor’s laptop display
  • It is preferable to connect the instructor’s station first, before the students start up and connect
    • Otherwise, students will receive a connectivity error
      Despite this error message, student computers will keep trying to connect until the instructor’s station becomes active, at which time they will be successful

Student computers are configured to connect automatically upon booting up and logging in.

  • An icon appears on the bottom right of the task bar to indicate that the computer is under observation
  • The "desktop" for each student logged in to the lab will appear on the faculty laptop display, identified by the specific laptop identification number
  • The size of these thumbnails can be changed by going up to the View Menu, and selecting Thumbnail Size
  • Double-click the thumbnail (or select the thumbnail image and click Observe) to display a specific student desktop on the full screen
  • Return to the group view by selecting Class view icon
  • Return to your laptop display by selecting the Desktop tab on the right edge of the screen

Broadcast a screen Top of page

You can broadcast your screen, or any students’ screen, to the rest of the class, a group, or to a specific individual by clicking the on the recipient(s), and then clicking the Broadcast icon.

Lock student desktops Top of page

You can lock a single student, a group of students, or the entire group.

To lock all of the students’ computers:

  • Select the Class thumbnail view
  • Click on the Lock icon
  • A message will appear, asking if you really want to do this-- answer yes!
  • All of the computers will be locked with a default screen message: “Eyes to the front, please!”

To lock a specific student, students, or group:

  • Select the thumbnail icon(s)
  • Click the lock icon, as detailed above
  • A lock icon will apear on the specific students' thumbnail

Set up groups Top of page

You may wish to organize the students into different groups for monitoring purposes, chatting, polling, project work, or simply for selective locking out.

  • Click the Group button
  • Click on the New… button
  • The New Group box will appear
  • Type a name for the group, then click OK
  • A new tab will appear for this group at the bottom of the class view page
  • Switch to the group by clicking the tab

To add/remove, students from a group, click on the Groups icon

  • Select the group you wish to edit, click Edit…
  • Click on the students on the left whom you wish to add to the group, then click Add->, or click on the students on the right whom you wish to remove, and click <-Remove
  • When you are finished, click OK

If you wish to allow students freedom to join the group on their own, select the check box at the bottom.

Poll your students Top of page
SynchronEyes allows one to pose a Yes/No question to the entire class, a group, or an individual for instaneous electronic feedback.

  • Click on the Vote button
  • Type in a Yes/No question and click OK

This question will appear on the students’ monitor. As they respond, results will be visible on the thumbnail view, with thumbs up/down icons appearing.

The chat function Top of page

  • To initiate a one-way conversation with your student, click on the Chat tab
  • Type a message in the window at the bottom and click Send
  • By default, a message will go to all of the students
  • Each student must click on the Chat button to bring up the message screen
  • Click the Enable icon to give students the ability to reply to you or to chat with others in the class
