Information Technology Computer Repair Services

  • SLU is a Gateway authorized repair center
    • Most warranty work for Gateway computers can be completed
  • Virus and spyware removal
  • Hardware installations
    • If we determine it is a hardware problem and the computer is
      not a Gateway, we will return the computer and instruct the student
      to call the manufacturer
  • It may be necessary to restore the computer to the original it was
    when you bought it due to corrupted operating system files
    caused by viruses, spyware and etc.

    • Whenever
      we restore a computer we will ask your permission and verify the data
      you would like backed up. It is crucial that whenever you receive voice
      mail or e-mail from IT asking for more information you respond as soon
      as possible. We
      are unable to continue working on your computer until we hear from you
  • All SLU computer repair rules will need to be followed and understood

What to bring with you for repair

  • Desktops
    • tower/CPU only
    • system recovery CDs, with your name on them
    • any hardware for installation
    • remove any CDs from drives
  • Laptops
    • the laptop and power supply only (we will not keep the carry case)
    • system recovery CDs, with your name on them
    • any hardware for installation
    • remove any CDs from drives

Personal computer repair rules

  • Information Technology repairs computers owned by St. Lawrence University students
  • Information Technology repairs computers owned by St. Lawrence University faculty, staff, or their immediate family
    • The family member must be living at the same residence as the faculty and staff member
  • The computer must meet SLU minimum system requirements for Information Technology to repair it
  • Information Technology provides no guarantee that we will be able to repair your computer
  • Faculty and staff personal computers will be repaired as time allows. University owned and student computers have priority over faculty and staff personal computers
    • If you need your computer repaired immediately, we recommend you take it to a local computer repair shop
  • Everyone should bring recovery CDs when they check in their computer
  • St. Lawrence University will not install illegal software on any computer. We require product IDs when installing personally owned software
  • Computers are to be checked in at the helpdesk during regular business hours (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) Mon.-Fri.
  • Information Technology reserves the right to stop accepting check-ins as needed due to demands of regular business
  • Any hardware or software costs, required to repair the system, are the responsibility of the owner. Labor is free of charge
  • As
    a faculty or staff member you may have a free copy of Sophos Antivirus
    and Sophos Remote Update for your personally owned computer. If your
    computer does not have up-to-date antivirus software installed these
    programs will be installed
  • Faculty and exempt staff
    members may have a copy of Microsoft Office Pro installed for work
    purposes on their home computer. This installation can only happen by
    Information Technology Technicians within the building. Non-exempt
    staff members must obtain written permission by their supervisor. Each
    user must sign and agree to the terms of use for this to be installed
  • Other
    university software available on request is the SLU VPN client and the
    Hostexplorer Saints software. These are also available for download
    from the IT web site
  • By checking in your computer at the helpdesk you agree to these terms
  • There are no exceptions to these rules
