External Organizations for IT in Higher Education

We are pleased to be affiliated with each of the following organizations for IT in higher education, and encourage members of the St. Lawrence University community to also take advantage of these rich resources for teaching, learning, and working with technology in the liberal arts environment.

Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC)

CLAC was "chartered to explore and promote the use of information technology in the service of our liberal arts educational missions" and includes, by invitation only, many of the top liberal arts institutions in our nation. As an institutional member since 2005, we partcipate in an annual meeting and submit to the EDUCAUSE Core Data Service; the latter is especially important for ongoing efforts to benchmark IT at St. Lawrence. Additionally, representatives actively solicit and share information through ad hoc surveys, facilitating the efforts of IT leadership to remain current in our fields.

EDUCAUSE; the Learning Initiative (ELI) and Center for Advanced Research (ECAR)

"EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology." We benefit from a vast array of resources, including publications (e.g. EDUCAUSE Quarterly and EDUCAUSE Review; 7 Things You Should Know About... series), interactive online activities (e.g. EDUCAUSE Live!; ELI web seminars), and numerous technology development events. We also recognize great value in NERCOMP, the northeast regional programming associated with EDUCAUSE.

"Why IT Matters to Liberal Education" (EDUCAUSE Review, 2008) makes a compelling case for technology in the liberal arts with an unique St. Lawrence perspective.  Also noteworthy, St. Lawrence has been noted in exemplary fashion within ECAR's formal IT governance study (2008); the Center for Teaching and Learning was featured in the EDUCAUSE Learning Spaces e-Book (2006) as a technology-rich and highly collaborative space for faculty development.

National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education (NITLE)

"NITLE is a community-based, non-profit initiative dedicated to helping undergraduate-centered colleges, universities, and educational organizations use technology effectively to strengthen undergraduate education." St. Lawrence faculty and staff have participated in valuable professional development programming, including a wide range of workshops, since the organization was established in 2001. Liberal Education Today journals items of particular relevance for higher education; see also the NITLE research wiki.

Recent participation in an Instructional Innovation Fund project resulted in a Media Scholarship in the Liberal Arts collaboration with Hamilton College and Colgate University.

Please note that a new NITLE network subscription model was implemented in July of 2008; you may contact Sondra Smith, NITLE Liaison, for more information.

New Media Consortium (NMC)

"NMC is an international ... consortium of over 260 learning-focused organizations dedicated to the exploration and use of new media and new technologies." As a member institution since 2005, we benefit through access to publications and participating in a range of events, projects or initiatives. The Newell Center for Arts Technology (NCAT) is a central point of contact for NMC-affiliated activities at St. Lawrence.
