- Sophos is the anti-virus software that the university uses. It is free to download for university students, faculty, and staff.

  • Downloading the file
    • To download Sophos, click here.
    • You can also access the file from the St.Lawrence homepage>technology>anti-virus
    • Enter your SLU username and password in the verification box
    • Save the file somewhere convient.
  • Install.

    • Double-click the file to download
      • It may look like nothing has happened, however, Sophos is being installed.
    • When Sophos has finished installing, a small blue shield will appear in the lower taskbar, near the clock                                                          
    • To open Sophos, right-click and select Open Sophos-Anti Virus

Scanning for Viruses Return to Top

  • Full Computer Scan

    • A full computer scan will scan all the files on your computer
    • Simply open Sophos, and in the main window click scan my computer.
      • This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours.
      • A report window will appear once the scan is complete.
  • On-Access Scanning

    • On-access scanning can be used to scan individual files or folders
    • Right-click a file, and select, Scan with Sophos Anti-Virus
    • View the report
  • Automatic Scanning

    • Sophos will automatically scan any file you download.
    • You can configure automatic scanning by clicking Configure>On-access scanning
      • Here, you can disable on-access scanning. You can also click read write to scan files everytime you open a file and everytime you rename a file
  • Reading the scan report

    • Iteams Scanned:The number of files you scanned
    • Iteams Detected:How many infected files were found
    • Iteams Dealt With:How many of the infected files were automatically fixed
      • Note: Sophos will only automatically fix files if you have configured it to do so
    • Iteams sent to Quarantine:The number of infected files sent to the quarantine. (For more about the quarantine, see below

  • To Quarantine a file means to get rid of the virus
  • To access the Quarantine, click Quarantine in the report window, or click Manage Quarantine Iteams on the main Sophos window
  • Your quarantine options are limited by the type of virus, and if you are the administrator of your computer
  • The different options you have are:
    • Delete: This will delete the virus AND the file
    • Clean up: This will remove the virus and keep the file
    • Move: This will move the file from one location to another
    • Authorize:This will tells Sophos to ignore the virus in futur scans
  • To perform one of the above actions, check the files you would like to select, and click Perform Action
    • Then click the action you would like to perform
  • IMPORTANT: If you can Delete or Clean Up a file, it is safe to do so. If your only options are Move and Authorize, you may want to contact the IT HelpDesk.

Updating and Creating a Scan Schedule Return to Top

  • Updating
    • To update Sophos, right click the blue Sophos shield and select update now
      • Sophos will update automatically, however, so this is not always neccessary
  • Configuring a Scan Schedule
    • To configure Sophos so that is scans on a schedule, click Set Up a New Scan on the Sophos main window                                                                
    • Name your new scan, and select the files you would like to scan
    • Click Schedule this scan
      • Click enable schedule, and select the day(s) and time you want the scan to run
      • Enter your computers username and password
      • Click Ok, and then save
