Downlading the Root Certification Return to Top Windows Vista requires you to install a trusted certificate file created on an authentication server to properly authenticate wireless users
- Downloading the File
- Connect to Guest wireless network or through an ethernet cable
- This file can be downloaded by clicking this link: https://download.stlawu.edu/network/wlan.cer
- After you click the file, enter in your St. Lawrence network account username and password to download the file
- Save the file to your desktop. It will be called wlan.cer
- Installing the File
- Double click the wlan.cer file to open the certificate
- Click Install Certificate
- Click Next in the Certificate Import Wizard
- Select the second option, Place all certificates in the following store
- Click Browse, check the checkbox for show physical stores, and then select Trusted Root Certification Authorities
- Click Next and then Finish to complete the certification installation
- Click Ok on the import successful and the certification window
Configuring SLU Secure Return to Top Pay close attention to the following steps:
- Create a Network Profile
- Click on the Start menu and click on the Control Panel
- Double-Click on the Network and Sharing Center icon
- On the left side of the panel, click Manage Wireless Networks
- Click Add, and then in the new window, click Manually create a network profile.
- Configure the Settings
- The Wireless Network information window will appear
- Make sure the follow settings are accurate:
- Network Name: slu-secure
- Security Type: WPA2-Enterprise
- Encryption Type: AES
- Check the box for: Start this connection automatically
- Click Next
- In the new window, click Change Connection Settings
- Click on the Security Tab
- Where it says: Choose a network authentication method, select Protected EAP (PEAP). Then click Settings
- The Protected EAP (PEAP) window will open
- Make sure the following settings are accurate:
- Make sure the Validate server certificate is checked
- Scroll through the Trusted Root Certificate Authorities menu and check the file named: ias01.stlawu.local
- From the Select Authentication Method drop down menu, select Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2). Then click Configure
- Un-Check: Automatically use my Windows logon map and password (and domain if any), and then click Ok
Log in to SLU Secure Return to Top There is one last thing you need to do before you can log on to SLU Secure.
- In the bottom right corner of your computer screen, click the icon that looks like a computer
- Click Connect to a Network
- Click SLU-Secure and click Connect
- Your computer will tell you that you need to enter additional information
- Click Enter/Select additional log on information
- Enter you St. Lawrence network account username and password
- Now you are connect to the SLU Secure wireless network!

Additional Information Return to Top - If you are experiencing problems, return to configuration instructions and remove any of the preferred networks that show as guest and/or slu-secure
- If you cannot browse any web pages after connecting to the secure wireless network, but the wireless network icon indicates that it is connected and the signal strength is good, make sure that your machine is getting a proper IP address
- To get your IP address, you can do the following:
- Double click the wireless network icon in your system tray. (i.e. The computer icon in the bottom right corner of your screen
- Click the support tab
- This will show you your IP address
- Make sure that your IP Address starts with 010.xx.xxx.xxx
- If it doesn't start with 010.xx.xxx.xxx, then something is wrong with the
configuration and you are not connected to the secure wireless network - If you have problems authenticating on the secure Wireless Network, please contact the IT HelpDesk at 5770.
- To get your IP address, you can do the following:

- In the top left hand corner you will see the wireless icon, selecting that gives you a drop down list with the option "Open Network Preferences." Select that.
- In the Network window you should see a drop down to select a wireless network. Slu-secure should be in that list, select that.
- It will then prompt for your network user name and password. Select ok.
- After a second a certificate window will come up, select "Show Certificate"
- It will then drop down and there will be a check mark box to "Always trust "ias01.stlawu.local"." Check that.
- Hit Continue
- It will then prompt for your Computer user name and password. Fill that out and select ok.
- You are now connected to SLU Secure
Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) Return to Top- For Macintosh laptops that use the Airport wireless adapter, click on the wireless network icon on the upper right section of your toolbar and select Open Internet Connect...
- On the Internet Connect menu, select File > New 802.1X Connection...
- On the Configuration drop-down list, select Edit Configurations...
- In the 802.1X Configuration screen, enter the following information:
- Description: Leave the default name as 802.1X Configuration
- Network Port: Your wireless adapter/card should be selected already e.g: AirPort
- User Name: enter your SLU network username
- Password: Enter your SLU network password
- Wireless Network: enter slu-secure
- Authentication: Make sure that PEAP is checked and uncheck all other types
- Click "OK" to continue
- Returning to the Internet Connect configuration screen, you should see the username and wireless network information you just entered in the previous step.
- Click Connect
- The 802.1x authentication message will be pushed to your computer and shown on your screen
- You will be prompted to either decline or accept the certificate
- Select the VeriSign Certificate from the list and click Accept all
- Provided you entered a valid SLU account username and password, you should now be authenticated and connected via PEAP.
- On the Internet Connect menu, click File > Quit Internet Connect to close the application.
- If you are prompted to save the configuration, choose to save it
- The 802.1x authentication setup is now complete
- In the future, when you want to reconnect to the wireless network, click on the wireless network icon on the upper right section of your toolbar
- Select Open Internet Connect...
- Click on the 802.1X icon
- Click Connect to reconnect
