Installing Sophos Antivirus for Windows 2000+ (includes: 2000/XP Pro/XP Home/Vista)

Sophos Antivirus is preconfigured on all University-owned computers. If you believe that Sophos is not updating on your University-owned computer, please call the HelpDesk at: (315) 229-5770 for assistance.

These instructions are for PCs running Microsoft Windows (includes: 2000/XP Pro/XP Home/Vista) only. If you are not running windows please return to the previous page and pick your correct operating system.

Before installing SOPHOS Anti-Virus, you must first uninstall any other antivirus scanning utility. This includes previous versions of Sophos Anti-Virus. For additional assistance removing Anti-Virus Programs please call the IT helpdesk at x5770.

To Remove an Anti-Virus Program:

  • Click the Start button to open the Start Menu
  • In the Start Menu, click on Settings, then choose Control Panel
  • In the Control Panel window double click on Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista machines)
  • This opens the Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features on Vista machines) window
    • Locate your Anti-Virus scanning utility. (Programs are listed in Alphabetical Order.)
    • Click to select your Anti-Virus scanning utility, then click the Change/Remove button
    • Windows will prompt you and ask if you really want to remove the Anti-Virus Scanning Utility
    • Click yes. A new window will open and the program will uninstall
    • You may get a warning that says something similar to "This program and all of its parts could not be removed." You can ignore this dialog, files in use by Windows will be removed when the system is rebooted if necessary.
    • Click OK. You may be prompted to restart your computer, if so click yes or ok to restart your computer

To Download & Install the Program:

Download savscfxp.exe (please use your network login to access the download file) from the IT download server. You may also choose to open or run the file from its current location (this option is only recommended on fast internet connection, for example cable modem or DSL). After the download is complete double click ESXP.exe to start the installation process. Sophos only needs to be installed once; the program updates itself and Sophos Anti-Virus when an update is made available.

  • Sophos Anti-Virus will install automatically
  • Installation is complete when the Sophos Shield Appears in the system tray
  • There will be no dialog box or progress bar during installation
  • After the shield appears right click it and choose Open Sophos Anti-Virus
  • The product version is listed under the status bar on the left, the latest version is 6.

Sophos updates virus identity files as soon as new viruses are discovered. Information Technology has set Sophos Anti-Virus to check for new updates every 60 minutes. You can still initiate and update manually by double-clicking the Sophos Shield

Information Technology preconfigured the Sophos Update client with locked settings. If Sophos Update should fail to update or install Sophos Anti-Virus, please call the HelpDesk at (315) 229-5770 for assistance.
