Windows Rollout 2008 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    2008 Computer Rollout Slideshow

    Green IT!
Information Technology has taken many steps in order to insure that Rollout 2008 is as sustainable as possible. For more information on our efforts, please visit the St. Lawrence Green Pages

What computer(s) will be replaced during Rollout?
All University owned Windows computers that were purchased with capital funds are to be replaced. Computers that were purchased with grants or gifts will not be replaced unless proposals have been submitted and approved by the Dean. If you received a new Apple computer last summer, your computer will not be replaced.

When will my computer be replaced?
Ruth Tully will contact Users as soon as possible before deployment. Your timing preferences will be taken into consideration, but concrete scheduling cannot be produced before deployment is under way. Expect an email update about this information.

What will happen to all of my files?
Information technology will be using a software utility to copy your personal settings from your old computer onto the new one. This includes your desktop, favorites, email settings, and address books, as well as your “my documents” folder. We still recommend backing up your information every three to six months.

Will my email messages be saved?
Messages in the inbox will remain on the server and accessible on the new computer as well as in web mail. Local email messages, address books, and bookmarks will be transferred with a software utility.

Will other computer equipment be replaced?
Standard keyboards, mice, and CRT monitors will be replaced. Current LCD monitors, scanners, speakers, microphones, and specially purchased equipment will not be replaced. Incompatible equipment must be replaced with operating funds.

How do I update incompatible software?
Incompatible software must be upgraded with departmental operating funds. Please contact Steve Millington if you need assistance with this process.

    Will there be training?
Please visit the Rollout Training page for information.

Will there be compatibility issues while working with people who do not have Office 2007?
There is a compatibility pack that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Office Website that will convert the new document file types to the old one so that users with old software can view new files. Users may also save their files in the old format by selecting “Save as” and choosing the Office 2003 file type.

Faculty and administrative staff can purchase Office 2007 for home use at the bookstore for $10. This is a one time use CD that is licensed by the University.

What if I cannot find a file from my old computer that should have been transferred?
Information Technology will store all old computers until September 19, 2008. If there is a missing file, please contact the IT HelpDesk [Ext. 5770] to request retrieval. We advise all users to be certain they are not missing any files before the above date, as all old hard drives will be destroyed before resale.

    Other Notes:
There will no longer be region free DVD players installed on any computers. However, several classrooms will be quipped with AV region free DVD players. Currently, these DVD players are located in Carnegie, for more information please contact the HelpDesk [Ext. 5770].

All Video Editing stations will now be Apple computers.
