VIRUS ALERT (1)

New Viruses

There have been several viruses infected e-mail messages circulating the Internet that have raised our attention. As always we ask the you use extreme caution when you receive suspicious e-mail messages. The following virus alerts could affect Windows users on campus.

W32/Nyxem-D - This Worm attempts to fool the user into opening an infected file disguised as a sex image or video clip. The most dangerous part of this virus is the payload, after sitting relatively dormant since infection the virus will overwrite several file types with invalid data so the files cannot be recovered. Deletion of files will occur the 3rd of each month beginning February 3, 2006 and specifically targets the following file types: DOC, XLS, MDB, MDE, PPT, PPS, ZIP, RAR, PDF, PSD and DMP

Troj/Stinx-N - This virus is spread via e-mail messages specifically targeting campus e-mail users alerting them to a rapist in the area. The content of the message is a hoax and the attachment is a Trojan infected file.

VIRUS ALERT (2)

Watch out for suspicious e-mail!

There has been an increased number of suspicious e-mail messages containing attachments, including executable (.exe) and compressed (.zip) files arriving in mailboxes over the last couple of days. Sophos Anti-Virus has not identified or removed these messages as virus infected, but they do appear to be malicious in nature. We have submitted a sample to Sophos technical support and hope to learn more soon.

We would like to remind you that it is always wise to use caution when dealing with e-mail attachments. Do not open e-mail attachments from e-mail addresses that you are not familiar with. Use extreme caution if you were not planning to receive an attachment from an address you are familiar with, it is safest to confirm that this contact did intend to send you an attachment. If you are unsure of the validity of an e-mail or attachment please contact the HelpDesk at x5770 with any questions.
