Scanning your Computer with Sophos (Windows)

  • Open the Sophos Program
    • Click Start > Programs > Sophos Anti-Virus
  • Make sure that your Sophos preferences are in order
    • In the Options menu, choose Configuration
    • Click the Action tab
    • Make sure the Disinfect Boot Sectors, Disinfect Documents, Disinfect Programs and Infected Files boxes are all checked
    • Make sure the Request Confirmation box is checked
    • Under Infected Files, choose Delete
    • Click OK
  • Make sure it says All Files under File Types for all drives
    • If it doesn't, click on a drive and then choose Edit
    • Choose All under File Types and click OK
  • Check to make sure you have the most current release of Sophos
    • From the Help menu, choose About. Make sure the version number is at least 3.76 and the release date is within the past month
      • If it is not, please call the IT HelpDesk (x5770)
  • Make sure there is a green light beside the drive you want to scan
    • If there is not, click the circle beside the drive icon (under Path)
  • Click the GO button
    • The program will sweep your drive checking for viruses and errors
  • If Sophos finds a virus that it cannot disinfect, a window will pop up asking if you want to delete (or shred, or etc.) the file, please call the IT HelpDesk (x5770) for further information
