Computing Information for Students
SLU network and Internet 
- Students automatically receive accounts for network, online course
management, e-mail, and APR (academic planning and web registration)access
- This account information is sent through the First Year Program office
- Students automatically receive personal network
storage space
- Most computers equipped with built-in ethernet can access e-mail,
the Internet, the campus library system, and a variety of other network
or Internet based services
- St. Lawrence is committed to providing a structured wireless environment to complement our wired network
HelpDesk and other IT support
- Information Technology offers assistance to students via the IT HelpDesk
- Students are required to bring the manufacturer's recovery CD for their personal computer to campus
- St. Lawrence University is an authorized Gateway repair shop and can provide repair services for Gateway computers under warranty
- Information Technology provides free virus and spyware removal for all student owned computers
Public Computing Labs
- Computer labs and residence hall computing clusters are also readily available
- Public computing labs are equipped with
- Microsoft Windows XP Pro
- Office XP Pro, also FrontPage and Publisher
- other software commonly used at SLU
- networked laser printing
- Most computers in campus labs and offices are Windows platform
- Some Macintosh computers are available in labs and used by faculty
Computer software
- The University requires students to have current antivirus software installed and automatically updated on their personal computers
- SLU provides free Sophos antivirus software to students
- Most new computers have a free, 30-day trial version of antivirus software installed, which is insufficient
- Computers found to be infected with and distributing viruses will be disconnected from the SLU network until cleaned
- Microsoft Office software is the standard productivity package on campus
- Students can access Microsoft Office software on lab computers
- IT does not provide Microsoft Office software to students otherwise
- Microsoft Office software may be purchased through the SLU Bookstore at academic pricing
- In some instances, academic courses may require other specific software.
- Course specific software is available on the SLU network, however
students may utilize lab computers if they do not own the software
or have access to the required operating system
Phone Service
Student FAX Services
- Students may send a FAX anytime using the copier located outside the mailroom in the new Student Center. Directions for sending a FAX are posted above the machine.This will require a valid SLU student authorization code (PIN). Your PIN will be charged normal rates (10 cents/min.) for the FAX transfer.
- To recieve a FAX:
- Have it sent to 315-229-7680
- Cover page MUST contain your name and CMR
- The FAX will be placed in your CMR
- If you experience any problems or have questions, please ask the Mail Services staff for assistance or contact the Mail Services directly at x5710.
Student Duplication & Copy Services
- Students can utilize any of the copiers located throughout the campus with their SLU ID. If the ID is encoded, just swipe the card and make your copies. Directions are posted above each machine.

Your ID card may already be encoded to make copies (try it). However, if it is not working, bring your ID card to Duplication Services (ground floor of Vilas Hall) Monday–Friday from 8:00am - 4:00pm to have it encoded.
- IMPORTANT: This does NOT use the campus wide account system. All copies cost 8 cents per page, and these charges will be added to your campus telephone bill.
