Back to Basics Session Descriptions

Crestron Multimedia Control System

Attend this session to become familiar with the systems installed for teaching technology in the auditoriums: Bloomer/Brown 122, Carnegie 10, Griffiths 123, Hepburn 218 and Richardson 15.

When using these spaces, you must use the Crestron touchscreen to turn on the equipment (video/data projector, VCR, etc.), and in many cases you also navigate menus through this system. Remote controls are no longer available in these spaces, with exception for slide projection.

More Crestron implementation info; see also Crestron instructions... (pdf)

SLU Network -- Mac or Windows specific

Attend this session (for Mac or Windows) to learn how to access network drives for secure storage at work (personal storage, storage shared with faculty and staff, and storage for class materials accessible by students). You will also learn about using the virtual private network (VPN) to access these same resources from home.

Digital Natives & the Net Generation: Why ANGEL Works

Perhaps you've become aware of the discussions surrounding recent research which indicates that the vast majority of students on our campuses should be considered "digital natives" -- that is, they understand digital technology as a first language. Alternately, many college or university employees have "digital immigrant" status -- carrying accents from the old country, so to speak, into our understanding of technology and the place for technology in teaching and learning.

One challenge we must address midst the frenzy of the academic cycle is to apply technology in a pedagogically-purposeful manner to benefit the teaching and learning experience. Attend this session to learn more about the characteristics of the "net generation" (Oblinger) and why ANGEL works for both "natives" (Prensky) and "immigrants" (Prensky) in this equation.

What is ANGEL? ANGEL is our online learning management system (similar to Blackboard or WebCT). More ANGEL info...

Courses developed in other systems can usually be imported into ANGEL; please contact Jim Forney (x5920) for assistance.
