Telecommunications Services
Our telecom office provides
voice communications, voicemail, and related
services to the students,
faculty and staff of St.
Lawrence University. The
office also provides consulting
services for moves, adds,
and changes throughout
the campus and information
related to telecommunications.
All telecom issues are now handled through the Information Technology HelpDesk, located in Madill Hall.
To contact the main campus switchboard, dial 315.229.5011; on campus, dial 0.
General information
Telephone
service is provided in all residence
halls, administration and instructional
buildings throughout the campus.
Many common areas such as lobbies
also have telephones. All telephones
can dial any number on campus
without charge. Off-campus dialing,
whether local or long distance,
is done through the use of calling cards; local calls are free!
Student telephone service
Dial tone is available in all student rooms, and students are required to bring their own telephones. Student voicemail boxes are issued by the telecom office free of charge.
7411 directory information
Using
a touchtone phone you
can access the automated
directory service by
dialing 7411 (or 229-7411
from
off campus), spelling
the last name of the person
you are trying to call.
If the last name is a
familiar name (e.g.,Smith),
the automated attendant
will prompt you to continue
spelling the name. Begin
spelling the first name
of the person you are
trying to reach. If there
are people with similar
first names, a list of
available choices will
be played for you to
select the person you
are trying to reach. (e.g.,
if we have three people
named Smith, but their
first names are Andrew
and Andrea and Brian,
you will be prompted to
continue spelling
the first name after
spelling
Smith, and as soon as
you press "A" you
will be given the choices
for Andrew and Andrea).
If
the name is somewhat uncommon,
as soon as there are no
other likely matches, you
will be placed on hold while
the automated attendant
switches you to the phone
extension.
The
automated attendant will
switch the call to the chosen
selection and their line
will be dialed. If the person
is on their line and they
have activated call forwarding
when they are on the phone,
you will automatically be
directed into their extension
mailbox where you can leave
a message. If the person
does not answer the phone
and they have activated
call forwarding when they
are away from their area,
you will be directed into
their extension mailbox
where you can leave a message.
If
you do not reach the person
or the voicemail, that
person either presently
resides off campus and you
should consider contacting
them either through campus
mail or e-mail. This service
is maintained by the Telecom
Office based on information
as provided by the students
themselves.
This
system may be used to find
faculty and staff members,
as well as students. It
can not find departments
as a rule; use your campus
directory (Larry) to obtain
this information.
